So what colour is cashmere?

Cashmere is what we call a warm neutral, meaning that it is has white/grey base with a reddish tone. So what does the cashmere color look like? You can actually find a range of shades that fall under the cashmere category, ranging from cashmere beige to cashmere grey. Cashmere, like most colours, often looks different under different lighting conditions.

So what’s the difference between cashmere grey and cashmere beige? Cashmere grey tends to be a slightly darker colour, which will look like a very light grey in darker lighting. It often tends to have pinkish undertones and is a very modern colour – think a classic greige colour. Cashmere beige tends to be closer to white, with more of a yellow undertone. Think the colour of white sand on a beach.

Is cashmere a good colour for a kitchen?

Cashmere, particularly cashmere grey, is an excellent colour for your kitchen. This is due to the versatility of this colour – with warm neutrals such as this being easily paired with many colour palettes and styles. The cashmere grey shaker kitchen was also one of the top selling fitted kitchens on offer from Howdens, so if this is your style – you’re in good company!

Warm neutrals are very easy to match with – they pair well with ‘colder’ colours such as whites, greys and light blues, whilst also looks great with ‘warmer’ colours such as woods, pinks and purples, and olive tones.

If you’re looking for cashmere paint colours, I would recommend the following colours from Dulux:

  • Cosy cashmere (beige cashmere)
  • Raw cashmere (mid-cashmere)
  • Malt chocolate (grey-cashmere)

Or from Sherwin Williams:

  • Warm winter (beige cashmere)
  • Limewash (neutral cashmere)
  • Skyline steel (grey-cashmere)

When looking for cashmere kitchen ideas, we often want to start by understanding the ideal colour palette. If you’re looking for colours that go with a cashmere kitchen, then Dulux colour suggestions are a great place to start.

Taking the Dulux colour chart for the associated paints, we see the beige cashmere (Cosy cashmere) being matched with pinks and berry tones, for more colourful schemes, or with more yellow toned greys and browns for a neutral colour scheme.

Raw cashmere is perhaps the more ‘mid-level’ cashmere, and is matched with an off-white and an olive shade for a neutral colour palette, or with a blush red tone and aubergine for a statement colour scheme.

Personally, both of these colour schemes are my idea of perfection – I think choosing these shades in any room create a really elegant colour palette.

Malt chocolate is the closest in colour to the classic Howdens cashmere shaker kitchen, so you may want to start here if that is the kitchen set you currently have. It’s also the colour that I have in my own kitchen at the moment, and I can confirm that these colour palettes would work well in person.

The colour scheme outlined by Dulux is pinky-browns for a neutral colour scheme, or blues for a more ‘designer’ feel. We have realised ourselves that blues are the best accent colours for our own space, although we have stuck to accessorizing with lighter blue plates, decor and kitchenwear (like peppermint candy) and a mid-level blue.

Funnily enough, Sherwin Williams also suggests a blue coordinating colour for their own cashmere grey. Secret cove is closer to the accent colours we have in our kitchen so I’ll have to agree with the experts here!

Two colours that are missing from the Dulux colour schemes, but which deserve a special mention, are blush pink and charcoal grey. When working with a cashmere shaker kitchen, pink can look fantastic when paired with cashmere colours, particularly if you are working with white countertops, whilst dark grey can help to provide a little drama to the room.

What worktop in a cashmere kitchen?

There are a huge amount of photos across the net that help with cashmere kitchen ideas. As you’ll see – the beauty of a cashmere kitchen, and most warm neutrals, is that it looks good with most things!

We see a huge trend in white marble worktops which look great in modern designs, and work really well with both cashmere beige or cashmere grey kitchens. Light worktops can brighten a room, and work best in smaller kitchens, or kitchens that don’t get much natural light.

The great thing about warm neutrals is that they can also be paired with woods in most tones – walnut, light oak and grey ash are great things to google if looking for cashmere kitchen ideas.

If you’re interested in grey cashmere kitchen ideas in particular then light oak/marble worktops look especially good when paired with pink textiles and gold handles, or with a mix-and-match navy blue kitchen island.

You may also be looking for islands for cashmere kitchen ideas, particularly if you like the mis-match look. Blue works fantastically well with both cashmere grey and cashmere beige colours, both Navy or pastel blues are equally successful in these spaces.

If you are going for a more traditional cashmere shaker kitchen, then darker worktops can also work well. This can help create a more mature, vintage feel, and works best in large kitchens with lighter floors.

What flooring goes with cashmere kitchen units?

Once you’ve chosen your countertops you’ll want to have a think about flooring.

If you’ve gone for a darker worktop then you should be aiming for cashmere kitchen ideas that centre around lighter flooring, as dark floors with dark worktops can really age a space – and not in a good way!

Lighter flooring also works well when you have gone for oak or marble counter tops too. We see a number of designs that go for white tiles – you’ll ideally want to go for an off-white to stop your space looking too clinical.

A modern alternative to off-white tiling is light wood tones – with a herringbone effect for extra brownie points! We usually see this with a grey undertone, particularly if you’ve gone for white marble counter tops.

Another (potentially surprising) trend we see when it comes to cashmere kitchen ideas are warm to dark woods. This looks great in more traditional style homes, and whilst darker woods may be better left to accessories and accent pieces, they bring some gorgeous contrast to a space.

Medium coloured oaks can also bring a bit more warmth to the colour scheme, particularly if you have left the walls white. We see medium oaks being introduced on the placemats and stools in the below image, but it would also look great as the flooring.

Make sure it’s not high gloss though! Leave that in the early 2000s where it belongs.

What colour textiles go with a cashmere kitchen?

When it comes to cashmere kitchen ideas I think we all agree that some inspo around textiles is a must. So what coloured textiles go best in a cashmere shaker kitchen (or any style of cashmere kitchen, for that matter!

Neutrals can enhance a modern look, and pair beautifully with a cashmere kitchen design – particularly if you can find neutrals with pink undertones. Velvet seating in particular can add additional texture and interest to an otherwise neutral colour scheme.

Cashmere kitchen ideas

Wondering if yellow works with a cashmere kitchen? It can do! Whilst these yellow chairs may have looked out of place in a pure white & cashmere colour palette, the addition of a petrol blue cupboard and warm countertops makes this colour scheme really work.

Petrol blue is commonly matched with cashmere colour schemes – in and out of the kitchen! It adds a nice pop of colour without ruining a more toned down colour palette, and looks truly sophisticated against a cashmere back drop.

A lot of cashmere kitchen ideas I’ve found online also favour dark grey textiles, when sticking to a neutral colour scheme. This can work particularly well to balance out warmer woods on the furniture or floors.

Cashmere kitchen accessories

For blue kitchen plate ware that you can proudly put on display, I highly recommend Burleigh ceramics, which ship worldwide.

Smeg appliances in light blue are awesome for cashmere kitchen ideas. whilst I wouldn’t personally recommend making light blue/dark blue a primary colour (eg colouring floors or walls with it – or even chairs) it does make for a great accent colour – so for things like your kitchen ware, any bowls that are on display, floor runners or table runners – blues are perfect.

If you’ve kept the walls light coloured, adding some elements of black or a darker colour can help to bring some contrast to a room, avoiding the ‘sea of beige’ trap that we can easily fall into when sticking too closely to a light neutral colour palette.

Cashmere kitchens with gold handles are not as common as you would think – but I can’t see why they can’t be done. Just be sure that any gold hardware you use, whether it’s gold handles or gold picture frames, is closer to brass in colour. Avoid cashmere kitchen ideas that use yellow golds, as this would cheapen the look.

That’s it for our cashmere kitchen ideas – hope you found it helpful! If you’re looking for some more kitchen inspo, we just published our top kitchen island lighting recommendations. You can check out my other posts for more inspo and ideas for every room in your home!
