If you don’t have the time for this treasure hunt, of sorts, do not fear! For I have searched far and wide for my own decor and I am ready to share my findings! The following items of bedding and throw pillows are all shippable world wide, and are all affordable! If you don’t find what you’re looking for here – thrift shops are an excellent way to find unique pieces to add to your decor! But more on that later 🙂

So.. what is Danish Pastel interior design?

Danish pastel interior design is a trend that developed in 2020, and has shown no signs of slowing down since then. It is the perfect mix of modern, funky Scandinavian shapes in beautiful pastel colours – often contrasting with white walls or floors.

Described as a combination of cozy Hygge with a playful palette, it is a fresh and fun design style to incorporate into your home.

5 Elements of a Danish Pastel Design scheme

Danish Pastel colour palette

The Danish Pastel colour palette is one of the most playful colour palettes in interior design right now – there are no real rules aside from making the most of mixed colours!

It leans heavily on a mostly pastel colour palette – which Wikipedia defines as

Pastels or pastel colors belong to a pale family of colors… The colors of this family are usually described as “soothing.” Pinkmauve, and baby blue are commonly used pastel colors, as well as mint greenpeachperiwinkle, and lavender.

Wikipedia

Pastels can come in a range of saturation, from bright baby blues to more muted dusky pinks, but they are generally primary colours that have been mixed with white.

You’ll want to ensure you are using 3 to 4 colours in your colour palette, whether you incorporate them through wallpaper, art, textiles or decorative items.

There are some colours that look better together – and most of them are quite unexpected! Take these colours from Dulux, for example – we see orange being paired with a lilac purple and a baby blue – with gorgeous results.

This is not a colour scheme we see often – however it is increasingly popular within Danish Pastel bedroom decor.

Another unexpected, statement colour palette pairs baby pink with sorbet yellow and a lime green. Again, something you would rarely expect to see together, but somehow it works!

If you’re looking for a more muted, dusky danish pastel colour palette – stick to the cool colours seen in the above palette, where dusky blue and dusky purple are mixed with a brighter pastel turquoise.

You can also use these colours sparingly, if you’re nervous to dive in head first. Adding these colours to Danish Pastel Bedding, with complimentary decorative items and wall art using the same palette, whilst leaving the walls white will help to ensure the colour scheme doesn’t become overwhelming.

Modern shaped furniture

Danish Pastel furniture can be classed as modern minimalist – in that it is made of clean lines and little no to embellishments.

However, the straight lines that we typically see in modern minimalist are nowhere to be found here – instead curved shapes are consistently favoured above all else.

Curved shapes such as wavy mirrors, cloud-like headboards and rounded bubble sideboards instantly add a touch of modernity and surrealism to a space. This is the furniture of the future!

If you’re been looking for Danish Pastel bedroom ideas, you’ve probably come across these wavy mirrors, which can be found in a range of pastel shades. These look great dotted around your walls, and placed on shelves. There are also full-length versions, which are a great way to quickly add interest to a bare wall.

We also see curved side tables and coffee tables in Danish Pastel bedroom ideas. Sklum.com have a wide range of curved, Skandi furniture in a range of pastel colours that would look beautiful in a Danish Pastel bedroom.

Alternatively – you can often find bit of furniture in the Nursery section of large retailers – where they tend to go for curved shaped and pastel tones. Just be mindful of the sizing – you may have to shop around a bit for something that fits (literally!) your space.

Playful patterns

Danish Pastel is famed for its playful patterns – checkerboard, floral, abstract – but all in clashing pastel tones to create a fun vibe. A simple google for Danish Pastel bedroom ideas will show you a plethora of art pieces in this style.

society6.com are a great place to search for Danish Pastel wall art – I particularly love this lilac purple checkerboard canvas, which is a great statement piece. You may also want to incorporate a similar pattern on rugs, tapestries or pillows.

You may even want to recreate this look on your walls – either by painting it yourself (shockingly easy to do with some tape and a ruler!) or even by purchasing a wallmural, such as the one below from wallmural.com

Expert mix of maximalism & white space

Maximalism is a key word you may be familiar with, particularly if you’ve been searching for Danish Pastel bedroom ideas. It is the opposite of minimalism and famous for being one of the trickiest styles to get right.

That is because maximalism requires an expert balance between filled spaces and ‘white’ spaces.

White space does not necessarily mean a literal white coloured space – it means empty spots to balance out the loud colours and patterns that come with maximalist styles.

As we see in this Danish Pastel space, by @kinevinje on Instagram – there is lots of interest created through the bright colours, modern shapes of the furniture, the pattern on the pillow and rug, texture on the door and fireplace, and gold accents.

However the space is still quite empty – creating a sophisticated balance. For this reason it is better to slowly add to your Danish Pastel bedroom, giving yourself time to find this balance, instead of googling danish pastel bedroom ideas and buying 30 items!

Unique decorative items to showcase your personality

A staple of the Danish Pastel trend is modern, matt, pastel coloured decor. This can either be bought via Etsy for more unique pieces, or you can pick up sculptural decorative items from places like H&M and paint them yourself with a matt finish.

Danish Pastel Bedding

Danish Pastel Bedding can be tricky to find in major retailers, and it will ultimately depend on what look you are going for on how easy you find it to get the perfect Danish Pastel bedding set.

I would recommend having a look in thrift stores – particularly for Danish Pastel quilts and throws, which can be paired with a pastel coloured bedding set to achieve the look you are aiming for.

Where to buy Danish Pastel bedding

Danish Pastel bedding can be found in a multitude of places – however it can be difficult to google yourself as it’s rarely under the search term ‘Danish Pastel Bedding’.

I must say – out of everywhere I looked, Shein had the most variety on offer so definitely check them out. Ikea also had some great options that would look great in a Danish Pastel bedroom – despite not necessarily being Danish Pastel design themselves.

I searched high and low myself, and have made note of the Danish Pastel Bedding sets that I shortlisted. Here are my top picks that I’ve found across the interwebs!

Danish Pastel Throw Pillows

If you prefer to stick to lighter bedding, or you feel that less ‘busy’ bedding will look better in your space (remembering that balance of white space!) then adding Danish Pastel throw pillows can be a better option.

Smaller and punchier, you’re able to mix and match clashing prints and colours to make a statement in your bedroom.

Where to buy Danish Pastel throw pillows

Again, this is up to your own tastes. Shein and roxannajaye are both good places to start with a range of brightly coloured, pastel printed cushions and throw pillows, but you can also find items at major retailers if you search ‘throw pillow’ + ‘pastel’ / ‘checkerboard’ / ‘scalloped’ / ‘rainbow’ etc.

Be careful though – a lot of retailers sell the cushion cover without any filling. Either prioritise merchants who sell filled cushions (like roxannajaye) or make a note of the measurements of your cushion covers and purchase inserts at the same time.

So what do you think? Are you going all in on Danish pastel bedroom ideas, will you be picking up one of these Danish Pastel bedding sets or will you be adding to your Danish Pastel throw pillow collection?

Whatever you decide to do – I hope your new design scheme will bring joy to your home and to your life!!
