If you’re wondering about implementing neutral Christmas decor for a neutral colour palette, but you’re worried about it looking ‘blah’ – then I’ve got you! Neutral tones are just as suited for Christmas as they are any other time of year, and although you may be used to the classical red and green Christmas colour theme, more and more people are using their own colour schemes.

Neutral Christmas Decor

What is neutral decor?

When it comes to colour palettes, a neutral colour palette is generally seen as one ‘without colour’ – think grey, creams, whites and blacks. However, what is classed as ‘neutral colours’ has been extended in recent years to muted colours such as sage greens or dusky pinks.

A neutral colour palette is often seen as peaceful and calming – creating a clean, cohesive space that relaxes the senses. That doesn’t mean it has to be boring though! The great thing about neutral colour palettes is that they go with anything – as long as the base tone is similar.

If you have ‘warm’ neutrals (colours with a red undertone like beige), then matching with other warm colours, such as terracotta, rose pink, or khaki works really well. If you have ‘cool’ neutrals (colours with a blue undertone like grey), then matching with other cool colours, such as blue, purple and pine green works well.

Neutral can also lend itself to the word ‘natural’ – so the addition of natural materials like woods and stones, along with plenty of greenery in the form of plants, lends itself really well to a neutral space.

So, what does this mean for neutral christmas decor? Well, it means the possibilities are endless! Whether you opt for cute homemade items from natural materials such as wood, rope or vines, or you introduce another colour into the space, or you stick with neutrals to match the space – it will look great!

Neutral Christmas Decor DIY

If you already have some colours in mind, it may be worth DIY’ing your neutral christmas decor so you can get it exactly as you want. Things like paper stars, spray painted baubles or homemade candles can be adjusted to your exact vision – particularly in terms of the colour scheme you are going for!

Origami stars

Do you remember making paper snowflakes at school? Well this is a slightly more adult version – created through the paper-folding art of Origami. What I love about this is that you can get great quality paper from hobbycraft for next to nothing, and it comes in a range of colours.

I love the neutral brown and white colour mix in this example above from Etsy (which is on sale for £15.50 if you’re not the DIY type). However, if you’re willing to take your chances, the right paper from Hobbycraft will only set you back around £3 – and you’ll be able to get several stars out of if which you can then hang around the home, or use as table decor!

Homemade-gifts-made-easy.com have a great tutorial for Origami stars which you can access here.

Spray-painted baubles

If you already have old baubles that you no longer want to use, it may be worth updating them with spray paint instead of going out to buy neutral Christmas decor. This is a relatively simple (albeit a little messy!) DIY trick that will enable you to get the perfect colour combination for your neutral christmas decor.

Personalised Ceramic Baubles

The matt effect of ceramic (/ceramic effect), wood and paper baubles is so classy and looks really special when compared to the typical shiny materials / glitter we use for christmas baubles. Most people who have a neutral themed home typically have quite a scaled back, classy feel so I think this style of bauble works particularly well in those spaces.

If you want to spray paint your existing baubles, graff-city.com is a great place to purchase spray painting materials – and they have a huge range of colours which means you can find the perfect neutral Christmas decor colours for your vision.

Textured Christmas Baubles

You’ll want to purchase a primer as well, which will allow you to use any paint type on the baubles surface.

  • Find a well ventilated spot for the spray painting – you don’t want to have the smell of chemical spray paints lingering for weeks!
  • Spray paint can be messy – you’ll want to take extra care to ensure it doesn’t end up getting on your floor, walls or furniture.
    • Use a cardboard box to stop the spray paint accidentally hitting other surfaces
    • Tape tarpaulin around the area you’ll be doing your DIY (on the floor and wall behind the area), so any accidents are contained

Neutral Christmas Mantel decor

Beautiful light up Christmas neutrals for your shelves and mantel pieces to keep the Christmas theme going strong. Again, this is an easy way to keep the Christmas theme continuing throughout the home, without spending lots of money on additional trees.

Tip: Put these items on window sills so they’re also visible from outdoors to help bring some Christmas cheer to your street.

If you’re not the DIY type, or you simply don’t have the time, there are plenty of neutral christmas decor items on the market that are both gorgeous and affordable. If you have a green christmas tree, you may want to opt for champagne, cream, silver or white tree decor, whilst if you have a white Christmas tree it may be better to go for accent colours such as browns or greens.

Tip: If you are opting for baubles that are the same colour, ensure they are different shapes and textures to keep the look interesting

I’m particularly loving the new trend of dried flower christmas baubles which look absolutely beautiful in a neutral decor theme – particularly alongside those matt style baubles that we saw above!

These glitter edge baubles are also so beautiful – when the fairy lights are on these little baubles really dazzle and bounce off the light – great for a festive feel!

Neutral Colour Christmas Decor for the Floor

Of course neutral Christmas decor doesn’t just consist of baubles and tree decorations! Personally, my favourite type of Christmas decor is in fact light up items for the floor. Great for awkward spaces and to keep the Christmas theme going in multiple areas of your home (rather than just around the Christmas tree in the living room!)

Tip: Light up floor decor can be a great alternative to a traditional Christmas tree. We see more and more people using lighting on artificial indoor trees to create a Christmas feel.

Neutral Christmas Stockings

Cream and white Christmas stockings look beautiful with other Christmas neutrals, whilst adding fairy light vines adds to a more natural, muted vibe. If you’re not lucky enough to have a roaring fireplace to burn these on, hanging them from banisters and window sills will do just as well! Bonus points for scoring some personalised stocking for the kids so you don’t have to DIY any dodgy stickers (/post-its) on the morning of!
