Mens wall decor – abstract art

When it comes to mens wall decor, I am a huge fan of black and white abstract art. Why? Because choosing mens wall decor is hard, and black and white goes with any colour palette you can think of. It can match well with any other art and any style of decoration, and it looks amazing in a masculine minimalist space. Large pieces of abstract art can really bring some finesse to a room, making it look complete and sophisticated.

When picking out your art, make sure you consider the size of the piece. For bare walls, wall art should take up 60%- 75% of the available wall space, i.e wall space that isn’t covered by furniture or moldings. If you are hanging the art above a piece of furniture, eg your bed or your sofa, the art should be 60-75% of the length of your furniture. Start out with measuring your wall space/furniture piece, then multiply that number by 0.6 or 0.75, then ensure you chose canvas sizes within that range. This also works well when adding multiple pieces of art, and even a gallery wall.

Wood panelling

Wood panelling alone can make a room look so put together, without needed to invest in additional wall decor. ‘Wood slat’ panelling is the best style of panelling for masculine decor, as it helps to create interest and intrigue whilst maintaining a modern minimalist style. This also means you can entirely avoid having to spend hours pondering about what pieces of art will go together, as wood panelling looks incredible by itself.

When it comes to mens room decor ideas, wood slat panelling is also one of the easiest to do yourself, as it requires minimal measuring and cutting, especially if you purchase the wood cut to size. However, it can be expensive, and pricing can fluctuate massively, so explore your options prior to making a purchase. For a cost cutting tip it’s also often cheaper to buy cheaper wood and then use a wood stain to get the finish you like.

Minimalist sconce lighting

Men’s wall decor can be tough to get right, and art can be difficult to settle on. If you’re not an art kind of guy, another simple solution to dressing up your walls is sconce lighting. When it comes to mens wall art in particular, I love stick sconce lighting (or Nordic sconce lighting, depending on where you shop). I think they’re beautiful statement pieces that work as both an art piece and an additional bit of low lighting. I’m truly in love with some of these designs, which would make a huge impact by themselves on a bare wall.

Mens wall decor – urban art

When it comes to art make sure it aligns with your personality. If you live in an urban area, come from an urban background or are into urban popular culture, there are some great graffiti style art pieces and sculptures on the market that go well with a modern masculine interior design. You could go for a Banksy print, if that’s your preference, but there are tonnes of original gritty, graffiti or urban style pieces that you can find online.

This works particularly well in a monochrome colour palette – so if your walls are white and furniture are black, metal and grey then adding some monochrome urban art can go well. If you have dark grey or black walls, and dark furniture, then definitely go for some brighter colours in your graffiti art. This style goes particularly well if you have coloured neon lights in your room as well (probably more relevant to younger men), which is usually a nod to popular culture and graffiti in itself.

Mens wall decor – 3D art

I’m a huge fan of 3d art for mens wall decor, and there are some great metal pieces you can get from Etsy – or if you’re particularly arty you can even try this out yourself. Metal 3d art also very rarely clashes with anything else, which is something you must consider when it comes to any wall decor.

I’m a fan of the super abstract versions, such as the image above from dunelm – which would make a great addition to any bare walls. There are also some versions on Etsy that are based on sound waves, which are unbelievably beautiful and luxe looking – check them out yourself!

An easier DIY (and equally striking) is 3D plaster art, as we see below. This can be achieved using muslin and clay/plaster, and then painting it your desired colour! There are plenty of tutorials on Youtube – just be careful you’re not spending more on the DIY version than you would to just buy it from a supplier.

Mens wall decor – black & white photography

If you have your own photos that you’re fond of, whether its of people you love or photographs you took personally that your particularly proud of – hang them up! When decorating your place don’t be afraid to inject some personality – I find black and white versions of your photos in large black frames can look stunning in any room.

Even if nothing springs to mind, if you have a favourite place to go, or a favourite holiday location, get a big version in a massive black frame and put it somewhere central. If you have a number of favourite places you can even try your hand at a gallery wall. However, if you don’t want to have your photos in a particular room, then a favourite of mine for mens wall decor is black and white landscape photos, or photos of objects.

Shelves & Sculptures

If you have some empty walls a shelf can be a great form of mens wall decor. This way you can experiment with sculptures, plants, books and standing photo frames. For a modern masculine style of interior decor, I would opt for wooden industrial style shelves, as pictured above. If you’re going for more of a luxury feel, then metallic pipe style shelves, like the one pictured below, in brass or antique gold can add a real sense of sophistication, and look beautiful with plants or glasses on top of them – or even by themselves.

When it comes to sculptures try to find things that are personal to you – whether it a sculpture of a character from your favourite tv show, or something that relates to your family history, or anything that relates to one of your hobbies – if you shop around you can find great unique pieces that really speak to your personality, history and style.

Mirrors

Believe it or not mirrors are not just for bathrooms, or checking your outfit before you leave the house. Interior designers have long played with mirrors in order to make rooms feel bigger and more put together, and it’s time you take advantage of this trick as well . I’m a huge fan of oversized mirrors – for above a sofa or cupboard works great, I like the round assymetrical ones but any industrial style will look great in a masculine minimalist decor.

For completely empty walls (with no furniture), go for a industrial-style floor to ceiling window mirror for a big impact. Ikea have some great ones for affordable prices, and you can google some ways online to ‘hack’ industrial style mirrors for next to nothing.

Mens wall decor – Gamer art

Again, your mens wall decor should have some of your personality injected throughout. Abstracts are great but you want your guests to know a little bit about you as well (and if you just want them to know you’re one classy guy then abstract art and lighting is enough!). There were 2.6billion gamers worldwide in 2020, and that number is only growing – and the art and interior design world have caught on. There is a growing trend of game themed mens wall art that can be found from specialist stores to big retailers.

So if you are a gamer shout it out, loud and proud, through your art! There are plenty of game themed pieces of wall art, or if you’ve thrown up your shelves, and you’re a fan of starwars – lego have a great set of sculptures that you can put together yourself. These look really classy and you get to indulge in your hobby and create something beautiful all by yourself – a win-win!

If you’re not a gamer, but still want to indulge in the trend, you can still have ‘game themed’ art – if you so wish. Chess and even noughts and crosses themed art would look stunning in any space.

Mens wall decor – Vintage posters

Again, in the interests of injecting your personality into your mens wall art, why not get some vintage-style posters of your favourite films? Depending on the colour theme for your home, I would go for netural coloured posters, like the two pictured above, but it’s completely up to you! These film themed posters would look amazing in your mens bedroom or living room, and look great bare or framed!

This post focuses specifically on the masculine minimalist style of mens decor – if your style is more rustic wood cabin, don’t worry! I’m working on a post for this style this week and will link it here shortly.
