What is art deco style

Art deco was a popular design style of the 1920s and 30s. It is famed for its embodiment of both luxury and modernity, combining expensive materials, with impeccable craftsmanship and a delightfully deep, rich colour palette. Art deco wallpaper was either patterned or floral, is beautiful rich shades of maroon, emerald and sapphire.

It went through a few distinct phases – starting out with a return to tradition, and stunning murals of images taken from nature such as garlands of fruit and bouquets of flowers. Later on, with the arrival of more sophisticated, automated printing techniques, geometric shapes took centre stage, making a look that was sleeker and more modern.

Sometimes, wallpaper would feature stylised scenes of modern themes, to represent the building it was set in. Such as a train station having illustrated depictions of trains travelling through a city scape, and bars would have 1920s stylised female figures. For me, when I think of art deco I think of peacock and ostrich feathers, geometrical patterns, metallic finishes and intricate detailing.
Top art deco wallpaper styles – luxe
Art deco has always been associated with glamour and hedonism, having taken hold just before the great depression. There was a reason it was called the roaring 20s! Luxury materials such as gold and marble were common sites in a fashionable home during this time-frame, and still look beautiful in any home design. Here are my favourite Luxe wallpaper styles:

Bobbi Beck has some of the most iconic art deco wallpaper going, and this leaf fan piece of art has to be my favourite. The emerald green with gold flecks is spot on, and looks wonderful in a dark and moody room with beautiful pastel pink furniture to create contrast and fun.

This wallpaper from Dunelm would look beautiful in any colour scheme, or even to highlight the ceiling in a light room. The gold leaf gives a sense of luxury, and makes a great contrast against the charcoal background. Match with metal and gold hardware, with jewel coloured emerald furnishings.

This art deco wallpaper from Lust Home is the height of lux art deco! The geometric patterns, with gold stencil and marble effect interior gives a true sense of luxury in any room. It is a slightly more pricey than other wallpapers on offer but looks like it is great quality and would be sure to catch the eye of any guests.
Top art deco wallpaper styles – Floral
One of the trail blazers of art deco interior and architecture was a french painter and textile designer – Charles Andre Mare. Charles was famed for his stylised rose and bouquet textiles, which would decorate every textile in the home from the walls to the floor. Art deco florals tend to be more brightly coloured than the floral prints that are common place today, and look great with a colourful interior, or as an accent wall in more neutral homes.

This stunning wallpaper from Bobbi Beck consists of a deep blue background and brightly coloured pastel flowers and butterflies. It would look stunning with vintage wooden furniture, 1920s mirrored drawers and brightly coloured feathered lighting. The colours would also look great in smaller bathrooms to make a big impact.

I love the bright, cheerful colours in this Graham & Brown wallpaper. It pairs perfectly with the bright pinks and blues that were common in the later years of art deco interior design. Match with modern, brightly coloured furniture with smooth lines, gold hardware and plenty of plants and flowers dotted around the room.
Top art deco wallpaper styles – geometric
Perhaps the best known of the Art Deco style, Geometric prints! In the later years of the era, new technology arrived which allowed printing of clear patterns and highly pigmented colours. The ‘pochoir’ stencil printing system also was the catalyst for geometric prints becoming popular, allowing textile manufacturers to create near-perfect, repetitive patterns which looked crisp and symmetrical.

Holden Decor Congo Geometric black wallpaper – Wilko
A stunning and highly affordable art deco wallpaper from Wilko, with a deep, green botanical background covered in gold stenciling. The addition of the tropical bird makes it feel very playful, meaning it would look perfect in social areas such as a bar or dining room.

The colours of this art deco wallpaper are really unexpected but so beautiful. These would pair beautifully with gold accents and both light and dark jewel toned furniture. It’s used to wonderful effect in the image in a bathroom – but I think it could look absolutely stunning behind a traditional art deco fireplace.

Rasch Art Deco Fan Black Metallic Gold Peacock Wallpaper – B&Q
For those looking for more muted colour palettes, this wallpaper from B&Q still screams art deco, despite being in more muted shades. The mix of cream, black and gold are incredibly classy and the light colours mean that you could use this wall paper on all 4 sides of your room without making the space feel small or dark.
Top art deco wallpaper styles – peacock
Feathers – both ostrich and peacock (but not pigeon or chicken for some reason..) were highly popular in the Art Deco era, symbolising opulence and exoticism. Peacock in particular perfectly matches the Art Deco colour scheme, with rich jewel tones highlighted in gold, the most decadent looking creature on earth!

Peacock bohemia wallpaper – photowall.co.uk
This peacock wallpaper from photowall is in slightly lighter tones than other wallpapers we have seen, making it an easy addition to neutral coloured or lighter coloured rooms. It makes for a great accent wall to any space, introducing some colour and luxury to an empty wall.

Deco Martini ‘Arsenic’ Wallpaper – Divine Savages
This wallpaper from Divine Savages is one of my favourites, and totally embodies the art deco era. The colours, the pattern, and lines – all look absolutely incredible and would make an impact to any room. Pair with gold hardware, 1920s sconce lighting and loud accessories for the perfect look.

Ok so this isn’t exactly a peacock print – more of a crane but what’s the difference right? I won’t tell if you don’t! The attention to detail on this wallpaper is jaw-dropping, the pattern and geometric nature of the birds feathers and pointed beaks make for a truly dramatic addition to your living room and bedroom that will have all your guests talking.
Top art deco wallpaper styles – murals
Murals are slightly different from wallpaper in that you usually apply it to just one feature wall in a room, whereas with wallpaper you have the option to add it to all sides of a room (although you can choose to have a feature wall if you wish too). This means that murals are designed with just one wall in mind, usually depicting a particular story or shape.
Murals were used in Art Deco period, particularly during the latter half, to nod to the purpose of the building. As mentioned earlier, this meant that bars would often have murals of stylised women drinking, or relaxing scenescapes, and industrial buildings would often have symbols reflective of their product.

Wonderland gold wallpaper – Wilko
This stunning design is also another bargain from Wilko – and is actually on sale! The colours are beautiful and rich without being too dark and overpowering, and the inclusion of little tropical creatures in top hats and monocles makes it so fun and playful. This wallpaper would make a beautiful addition to any room, and would look stunning paired with latter art deco furniture pieces.

Deco Arches grey mural – Dunelm
A sleek and sophisticated geometric design from Dunelm in a beautiful deep grey with gold detailing. This would make an elegant addition to any room, and goes particularly well with brighter coloured velvet soft furnishings, common in art deco interiors.
